Testing taxonomies

How do we test taxonomies with users? Joseph Busch and Ron Daniel have lots of ideas, including:

Qualitative methods:

• Heuristic walkthroughs against established editorial rules
• Usability testing using a different type of "prototype" that isn't pages but simply different views of the site structure/navigation
• User surveys showing multiple UIs
• Having users tag sample content to see if the taxonomy is intuitive

Quantitative methods:

• Analyze how content gets distributed across categories, and look to split up the top category(ies) in the Zipf distribution curve.
