What people are doing online
Harris Interactive, Nielsen BuzzMetrics, and Yahoo! opened the curtain on some of their data on the general U.S. population:
- 55% won't make a purchase until checking online product reviews
- 50% have used IM in the last 30 days
- 33% have read a blog in the last 30 days
- 10% have written a blog entry in the last 30 days
- Nielsen had lots of data showing that consumers trust word of mouth more than any other information source
Among U.S. young adults 13-24:
- 72% own and use a mobile phone regularly
- 28% own an MP3 player
- 68% use email at least once a day
- 49% use IM at least once a day

"two months ago, a Yahoo/OMD Internet Deprivation Study, which involved 12 US based families going without any kind of online access for two weeks (backed up by a survey amongst 1000 online users), found that 'regardless of age, household income or ethnic background, all participants in the ethnographic research study experienced withdrawal and feelings of loss, frustration and disconnectedness when cut off from the online world'. Furthermore, participants described their time offline as 'having to 'resist temptation', missing their 'private escape time' during the day, and 'feeling left out of the loop'. "
